Winnie D. Carter Canton-Winnie Duke Carter, 100, formerly of 188 Trantham Road, Canton died Saturday, October 9, 2004 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. A native of Carroll County, GA, she was the daughter of the late William Marion and Katie Lang Duke. She was the widow of the late Arthur Melvin Carter who died in 1939 and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Carter Ledford and sons, Ernest Melvin and William Eugene Carter. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, a cook at Woodfin School and had done mission work all over the county, was a member of Oak Leaf Chapter 81 of The Eastern Star, and she drove for Meals on Wheels, was a weaver at Martel Mills, former cook for H. G. Bradley, and three major restaurants in Asheville. Surviving are a daughter, Marion Carter Owenby of Dunn, NC, daughters-in-law, Dorothy Carter of Canton and Leslie Carter of Hayesville, NC. Ten grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and fifteen great great grandchildren. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 11th in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services with the Reverends Bruce Cayton and Carroll Owenby officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 am Monday at the funeral home and at other times the family will receive family and friends at the home of Dorothy Carter. Burial will be in the Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery in Ellenboro, NC. Memorials may be made to the Missions at Oak Grove Baptist Church at 39 Robinson Road Clyde, NC 28721
